Vincent Clerc: "I always want to score"

The Toulon wing, who is to start against Oyonnax, next Saturday, attended the pre-game press conference on Thursday.
Vincent, you’re part of the team that will start against Oyonnax, next Saturday. What are your feelings about this?
I’m working very hard to play games. Of course, I’m very happy to be included within the team that will start the game. It feels good. Every week, I train to play and I’m waiting to be called. But I’m still committed and, every week, I train in a similar way. Then, one learns, at the end of the week, whether one is picked or not. But I always train to play and deliver whenever I’m called, even if I don’t start the games all the time. My injury now belongs to the past. I had to train harder before the season began and I had to do extra sessions. But playing less often early in the season turned out to be an advantage: I could train properly and, now, I’m trying to get better and better.
Are you thinking about reaching the 100-try mark?
No, I’m not really thinking about it. If I am to score this try, it will come naturally. This is totally different from the will to score – which I’ve always had since I began playing rugby. But one should not think too much about it – otherwise, this could result in poor performances. First, I’m trying to deliver, which means I want to put the finishing touch to everything. I’m doing everything for the opportunity to come, but being obsessed with it would be a mistake.
Will it be a special game with the forthcoming Christmas break?
You know, we haven’t thought about the break for a long time, as we’re now used to playing twice in this period – around Christmas time and New Year’s Day. The game against Oyonnax will be crucial. We want to get back to the top of the table, earn points and come out with a victory.
