The game between Rugby Club Toulonnais and Toulouse, the reigning French champion, ended on a draw (13-13). It was the last game of 2019 for Toulon.
Our men in red and black wanted to end the year on a high note for this away game and go on with their string of good performances.
Toulouse showed much realism in the early part of the game and quickly took the lead, thanks to a 40-meter penalty by Thomas Ramos. 3-0.
After a penalty conceded near the half-way line, scrum-half Sébastien Bezy went round the backline and scored the first try of the game. 10-0.
Toulon had most of the possession during the first half and put the pressure on the home team, but lacked both accuracy and realism. Toulouse had a ten-point lead at half-time.
The home team made a strong start to the second half and Toulon committed yet another foul. Thomas Ramos converted the penalty and Toulouse were leading 13-0!
However, Toulon’s efforts were then rewarded. After a clever pass by Baptiste Serin, Louis Carbonel went forward along the touch-in-goal line and resisted Romain Ntamack to reach the in-goal area. The try was converted by Anthony Belleau. 13-7.
Ten minutes before the end, Anthony Belleau went forward and pressured Toulouse into a foul. Toulon manager Patrice Collazo asked for a conversion attempt and Belleau brought his team within three points of Toulouse. 13-10.
Julian Savea then pierced through the Toulouse backline and Toulon grabbed the draw thanks to a penalty, after another foul by the home team.
The “Boxing Day game” proved to be quite a showdown and Toulon drew 13-13 against Toulouse, which extends their unbeaten run to nine games and bodes well for the rest of the season.
