Bryan Habana: "I hope the club will go on winning"

Toulon wing Bryan Habana will retire at the end of the season after an exceptional career. He will remain as one of the greatest players in the history of the sport and he attended the pre-game press conference at the Stade Mayol, last Wednesday, to talk about his decision.
Bryan, when did you take the decision to retire?
I announced my decision yesterday, but I had been thinking about it for a few months. I was still looking for a few possibilities but, unfortunately, I haven’t had the opportunity to play – even in a couple of games. I talked with my wife and my relatives. Then, I took the decision to retire about two or three weeks ago.
What memories will you keep from your Toulon years?
When I arrived here, I said I would like to make the club grow. The first season was incredible: there were world-class players and we won the double! [The European Cup and the Top 14] I remember when we came back. It was fabulous: there were 70,000 people around the harbour, waiting for us! I really enjoyed the five years I spent here. I’ve also learnt French and my son is learning it, too. But everything is great here. Everyone has always been very kind to me. I think I played my part in the trophies won by the club and I hope the club will go on winning many other ones after I have left.
Are you anxious about being a retiree?
I don’t really know. We’ll see. All these years, I’ve been quite fortunate as a rugbyman and it’s been incredible. I hope I won’t regret anything. It’s not the case for the moment. I think one would rather choose the way one retires, but I couldn’t do it. It’s hard to stop now, but that’s the way things are.
